The young athlete Gilbert Kwemoi is said to have died in Mount Elgon hospital after a short illness. The late athlete was born in Kipsigon in Mount Elgon area, Bungoma County on October 3, 1997. He has been rigorously training in Iten and also under the guardianship of the National police service Isaac Kirwa.

Kwemoi who was 23 at the time of his demise, amazed the crowd in China Olympic games held in Nanjing where he won gold in 1500m in 3:41.99 during the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.

In 2015, Kwemoi competed in the African Under 20 Championships in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, and won Kenya a
silver medal. It is said that the athlete passed on Friday 13th August at night. Kirwa, his coach has promised to give
more details about his untimely death today. According to the family, Kwemoi complained of a headache and was immediately rushed to a hospital where he, unfortunately, succumbed while undergoing treatment. The family has commenced funeral arrangements at his home in Mt Elgon and we shall issue more updates in due course.

The senate speaker Kenneth Lusaka has eulogized the young athlete in a long Facebook post saying, “Gilbert Soet Kwemoi was a humble, talented, and outstanding sportsman with a bright future. After he won Gold at the African Youth Games in Gaborone, Botswana in June 2014, Kwemoi paid us a courtesy call when I was Bungoma’s first Governor. During our brief tête-à-tête, he struck me as a focused and hardworking young man who would not let anything stop him from shattering world records. Sad that we lost him before he attained his full potential. My deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the people of Mt Elgon, and the entire athletics fraternity during this difficult time.Rest In Peace Chitab Koreet”
