IEBC extends voter registration exercise pending court hearing
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has given in to the persuasion to extend voter registration exercise following a High Court order on November 1, 2021.
In a statement released on Tuesday night, the Commission chair Wafula Chebukati said that IEBC will follow the order to extend deadline for the new voter registration exercise until further notice. The process was scheduled to end on November 2, 2021.
“The Commission properly advised on the legal and operational ramifications of the Court order, moved to court to challenge the order. Meanwhile, the Commission has directed that pending hearing of the case tomorrow [today], registration process will continue taking place until further advised”, read the statement in part.
IEBC had filed a lawsuit in court to overturn the order extending the registration period due to budget constraints. The case will be heard today.
According to the Commission acting CEO Marjin Hassan, the exercise had recorded cumulative 1,144,994 new registered voters as of October 31.
