Ksh.1 Million for Every Athlete Who Won Gold Medal- Uhuru Awards Athletes
President Uhuru Kenyatta rewards athletes who got medals in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics KSh. 1M, KSh. 750,000 and KSh. 500,000 for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists respectively. The Head of State also rewarded a uniform token of KSh. 200,000 for all athletes and officials, including the Paralympics team, participating in the delayed Summer Games.
“The President thanked the Olympians for their outstanding performances that saw Kenya top the African medal chart and challenged the sporting fraternity to ensure the country continues to excel on the global stage,” the head state said in a tweet statement.
This comes after Kenyans complained on social media about the reception the athletes received upon arrival from Tokyo Japan for the summer games. Netizens were quick to criticize the cold welcome that the Olympians got in comparison to their Ugandan counterparts who were rewarded handsomely.
The government spokesperson was quick to defend the reception saying “It was a proud moment and people tend to get carried away by such. Covid-19 protocols had to be observed even at the airport,” Cyrus Oguna.
Kenya got 10 medals during the postponed Summer Games, including four golds, four silvers, and two bronze medals.
