Nairobi County Assembly Beatrice Elachi has resigned f with her deputy John Kamangu (Member of the County Assembly in Ruai) taking over the position in acting capacity
Elachi handed her resignation in on Tuesday morning; saying that in the recent past, there have been life-threatening incidences.
In a televised statement, Elachi read out her resignation letter which was addressed to President Uhuru.
“I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenya. For the last few days there have been life threatening incidences. I appoint my deputy speaker, John Kamangu as acting speaker,” she said.
She thanked the President and noted that Nairobi was going to thrive under the stewardship of the newly-constituted Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS)
Elachi, who took over as Speaker at the Assembly in 2017, cited frustrations and threats to her life as some of the reasons that led to her resignation.
Elachi’s leadership has been marred by chaos and wrangles, and she was even kicked out of the assembly in September 2018, just one year in office.
he was later reinstated by the court but her return was also characterized by chaos and drama after MCAs loyal to the Governor tried to block her.
She has served since October 2019, but she again fell out with MCAs leading to renewed calls for her impeachment.
