Police officers recalled from leave to reinforce security
All police officers on leave and off duty have been recalled to work after a directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta to heighten security in the country.
Effecting the order, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai Friday said that the officers are expected on duty by November 15, 2021.
President Kenyatta was speaking during a National Security Council meeting in which he emphasized the need to intensify surveillance and vigilance across the country following deteriorating security situation in the region.
On Wednesday, two KDF and GSU officers were killed by armed bandits in Kamwenje area, Laikipia West in the ongoing chaos in the area, raising fear and tension among residents.
The ambush took place in Laikipia Nature Conservancy where several other security officers have been killed in similar attacks.
In the order to be implemented by regional police bosses, Mutyambai noted that the escalating political tensions in the country may compound to a dire security threat if not contained. He also cited the ongoing civil uprising in the neighboring countries of Ethiopia and Somalia as potential reasons for increased vigilance.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i promised to ensure that political leaders tow the line and those inciting violence dealt with according to the law.
