A menstrual cup has been the talk of town in the recent past. Most ladies specially those who react to sanitary towels and tampons have embraced this cups.

This cups are reusable and can be worn for up to 12 hours depending on your flow.

How to use a menstrual cup

Before buying a menstrual cup, there are a number of factors you need to consider to be able to figure out the right cup for yourself.

  • your age
  • whether or not you have a heavy flow
  • firmness and flexibility of the cup
  • cup capacity
  • if you’ve given birth

Before you put in your menstrual cup

It is advisable to lubricate the rim of your cup if you are a first time user as it will make the process of insertion smooth.

How to put in your menstrual cup

  1. Wash your hands .
  2. Apply water or a water-based lube to the rim of the cup.
  3. Fold the menstrual cup in half, holding it in one hand.
  4. Insert the cup, rim up, into your vagina like you would a tampon.
  5. Once the cup is in your vagina, rotate it so that it can open.

Once you’ve inserted, you are not supposed to feel it (just the same way you don’t feel your tampon).

You should also be able to move, jump, sit, stand, and do other everyday activities without your cup falling out.

When to take your menstrual cup out

You can wear a menstrual cup for 6 to 12 hours, depending on your flow.

You should always remove it before 12 hours and empty it.

How to remove your menstrual cup

  1. Wash your hands .
  2. Place your index finger and thumb into your vagina. Pull the stem of the cup gently until you can reach the base.
  3. Pinch the base to release the seal and pull down to remove the cup.

Cup care

Reusable menstrual cups should be washed and wiped clean before being reinserted into your vagina. Your cup should be emptied at least twice a day.
