Seven wardens arrested over Kamiti Maximum Prison escape
Seven wardens have been arrested following the escape of three convicts from Kamiti Maximum Prison yesterday.
The convicts who were serving jail terms for terrorism-related crimes escaped from the facility under unclear circumstances and are on the run.
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i blamed the escape on laxity and incompetence of wardens suggesting the escape were abetted.
“We will not only go the direction investigations will point us but we will act resolutely to ensure this kind of recklessness does not happen again because it exposes our people,” Matiang’i said.
He was speaking at Kamiti Maximum Prison facility where he led a senior security team comprising Principal Secretaries Karanja Kibicho and Zeynab Mohammed (Correctional Services), the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, DCI boss George Kinoti and Commissioner General of Police Wycliffe Ogallo.
The CS assured civilians that the security teams are on high alert and urged calm as the search continues.
“We are all mobilized and we have sent messages across the country to all exit and possible movement points. We are going to conduct a massive manhunt for those three. We have to get them,” CS Matiang’i said.
