Sierra Leone tragedy: scores dead, injured in tanker explosion
Close to one hundred people have died in a fuel tanker explosion in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
“The explosion occurred when a tanker entering a nearby filling station to discharge fuel collided with a lorry,” Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) told BBC.
Casualties included people who had gathered to collect fuel leaking from the ruined tanker.
Survivors were taken to the nearest hospitals and health centers for treatment. The incident occurred on Saturday morning.
Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio expressed his sympathy to the affected families and promised full support.
“My Government will do everything to support the affected families,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.
